Braces Technology

3M Unitek SmartClip™ Braces

We utilize the SmartClip™ appliance by 3M Unitek in our office. Using a passive self-ligating (sliding-door) system instead of rubber elastic ties, SmartClip braces are a revolution in orthodontic technology! They can minimize discomfort and reduce overall treatment time.

Unlike other similar products, SmartClip™ brackets do not involve opening or closing the device to insert or place archwires. The bracket system uses technology known as "self-ligation" that allows the wire to slide back and forth within the bracket.

In addition, colorless, light-sensitive adhesives make the procedure faster, cleaner and less noticeable. This means that patients have reduced discomfort caused by adjustments as they do not spend as much time in the chair, and they receive efficient, reliable tooth movement.

Increased comfort, faster treatment time and overall reliability make the SmartClip™ a good choice for many patients. If you have any questions, consult your orthodontist.

Clarity™ SL Self-Ligating Braces

Many patients enjoy the combination of ceramic and metal because it is simultaneously attractive and sturdy. Clarity™ braces feature a comfortable design with a translucent appearance. Made from a hard ceramic material, these braces are so sturdy that many doctors will recommend them to their patients who play sports. , Patients are allowed to engage in most everyday activities without fear of delaying or impeding their progress.

Also, because they have a semi-transparent color that will not stain or discolor, patients can proceed with necessary orthodontic treatment without having to feel self-conscious. In addition, Clarity braces’ smooth, rounded shape allows for greater patient comfort.

These features are designed for patients regardless of age. With the same performance as metal braces, many patients are now choosing the clear option – Clarity!

Invisible Incognito™ Orthodontic Braces (formerly iBraces)

Incognito™ Orthodontic Braces are placed behind the upper and/or lower teeth, creating a more aesthetically pleasing effect. Because the brackets and archwire are actually placed at the back of your teeth, they are virtually undetectable, allowing you to retain your normal appearance for the duration of your treatment.

Dr. Runnels has taken courses specializing in the placement of these braces. They are custom-made for your maxillofacial structure. While some patients note problems with speech initially, such problems generally disappear within a few weeks and with practice.

TADS (Temporary Anchorage Devices)

A TAD is a mini-screw implant device that has multiple uses and can be placed with minimal discomfort. These mini screw implants can be used to assist or in some cases prevent oral surgery. TADS might also be used as a temporary dental implant on which a temporary crown may be placed as a substitute for a missing tooth until a patient has reached dental maturity. It also allows for more effective tooth movement which means shorter treatment time and improved patient care.
